You Don't See That Every Day . . .

I've picked up Keeton this morning, a quiet ride full of contemplation and introspective muse before the Lord. Then, up ahead in the distance, I see a column of smoke rising. As I get closer, a scene very similar to this appears on the side of the road:

A man, dressed in black, stood a few feet away, his hands on his head in a stance of utter dismay. While not far from civilization, he definitely has a walk before him should he wish to arrive at his intended destination.

I hesitated, and pondered: How can I help? Vehicles were whizzing past him, undaunted by the evidence of loss before them. Call 911?

As soon as I had the thought, the lights from the fire truck flashed ~ help was on the way.

I continued my sojourn home, even deeper in thought.

Living Matthew 25. Such a simple response to human kind, yet one of the more difficult life tasks in our complex world.

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Matthew 25: 34-40

And then there is 1 John 3:16-18:

But whoso hath the world's goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him? My Little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and
truth
.

The Word is clear, the poor we will always have with us, and our response is to be an action response:

For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land. Duet. 15:11

So, while I drive on by this stark opportunity to assist, I must evaluate the other corners of my existance, and measure it by Scripture, that I find myself in expression of the fullness of Acts 4:34-35:

Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, and laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

Choices.

We make them every day. Repeatedly. May my choices be the choices that give honor unto the King.

What will your choice be today?

Our family is so blessed. He has given us all that we need. We try to teach our children by our words and actions and hope that they come away with the sense that giving and doing for others is something that should be second nature. We are far from perfect, but we strive to "be the change".
